Claiming Spaces Collective at the Architecture and Spatial Planning
Faculty, TU Wien. Afaina de Jong is the first C*S guest-professor at
the TU Wien and for the this Biennale they collaborated on an extended
version of the glossary.

accessible, ever-growing vocabulary for the fields of architecture and
design to name existing power structures and work towards a language
that can facilitate the shaping of spaces of diversity and

Queer Feminist Glossary

<p>Rotterdam has received international acclaim for its iconic
architecture. But none of the city’s visions and masterplans, however,
portray or even take into account the city’s highly diverse make-up.
‘Cruisekade a.k.a. Black to the Future’ addresses the whitewash of
Rotterdam’s future and the glaring Black absence in its future visions,
using the infamous street West-Kruiskade as reference. West-Kruiskade is
slowly but surely becoming victim to gentrification and overactive urban
planners who have redesigned the street profile so it becomes almost
impossible to cruise and hang out in cars, rendering it just another
generic street. Its unique character of vibrant street culture and
cosmopolitan shops and restaurants are left uncelebrated. Much of the
footage was shot in the early 2000’s, before the street’s gentrification
began.</p>

<p><em>Multispecies Urbanism</em> and <em>The Multiplicity of Other</em> offer a glossary
of terms intrinsic to understanding both concepts/practices. These flags
present a selection of 10 terms. A new flag with a new term will be
raised every three weeks highlighting the language and definitions that
shape the thinking behind <em>Multispecies Urbanism</em> and <em>The Multiplicity of
Other</em></p>
<p>There is no such thing as 'world peace'. Agonism is the political theory that centers the positive aspects of political conflict. Accepting a permanent place for debate, dialogue, and conflict, the agonistic process is a positive form of political engagement which promotes and furthers the development of democracy.</p>

Glossary Flags

<p>From a <em>Multispecies Urbanism</em> perspective, human-soil relations are the
nexus of their ecological + social +governance relations. Understanding
human-soil relationality is based on three notions. First, that urban
soil organisms are relational –socioecological and regulated. Second,
that human-soil relations and praxes of care are central to a just urban
development when the needs of the soil organism are attended. This
contrasts with the role that soils are generally given – as placeholders
of landscape architecture, infrastructure storage and drainage, and as a
support surface for architectures. Third, as <em>Multispecies Urbanism</em>
proposes collaborating with the soil biome in climate crisis mitigation
with amore-than-human alliance, the soilis endowed with a right to the
urban metabolism. This contrasts sharply with contemporary urban
human-soil relations, in which the role of the soil organism is largely
ignored except in extractive relationships.</p>

Infrasol

<p>Documentary of the research project ‘Just Hanging Out’ in The New Garden
of Het Nieuwe Instituut. The research considers the act of hanging out
in public space as a spatial cultural practice that might not be
considered culture, but that actually is deeply cultural and part of a
long tradition within the public spaces of Rotterdam. And that, as such,
should inform its development. The documentary portrays people who
frequent the garden and gives an idea of what this unruly space means to
them.</p>

Just Hanging Out

<p>The manifestos of <em>The Multiplicity of Other</em> and <em>Multispecies
Urbanism</em> follow the praxes and theories of De Jong and Solomon, while
at the same time pinpointing and acknowledging their source material.
Building on these foundations, De Jong and Solomon insert themselves as
players into the fields their philosophies must upend.</p>

Multispecies Urbanism

<p>PRETA is a play based on the actor Gio Lourenço’s memories of the 90’s,
when he arrived in Portugal from Luanda, Angola. When he arrived,
Lourenço moved into Bairro do Fim do Mundo (End of the World
Neighbourhood) in the periphery of Lisbon. Through the body, he
rediscovers the gestures and itineraries of the transition from
childhood to youth. Preta was also the ferocious female dog that
patrolled/guarded the border between home (in the neighborhood) and
school (outside of it), who forced Lourenço to practice movements of
escape, silence and transgression. A performance about two different
universes, territories closed on themselves, and the possibilities of
connection between them.</p>

PRETA

<p>Radical Observation documents the Amsterdam Zuidoost Food Forest (VBAZO)
Community of Praxis teaching themselves to understand and design the
55-hectare public space food forest. The short films show the VBAZO
Community of Praxis conducting the Radical Observation exercises in the
food forest.</p>
<p>Radical Observation is a series of exercises developed by
Solomon/Urbaniahoeve to teach natural world awareness and ecosystem
stewardship. The exercises are intended for anyone preparing to ask
design questions about upcoming landscape interventions. The technique
focuses attention on processes occurring over time; that is, plants
growing throughout the seasons, plantcommunities wandering through
space, and habitats accommodating ever more plant and animal life.
Regular practice of the more than 40 exercises yields understanding of
ecosystem patterns and rhythms, increasing stewardship knowledge of an
area under observation.</p>

Radical Observation

<div class="work-content">
<p>Solomon proposes a permanent inter-vention to the Giardini in Venice to
radically increase biodiversity and soil health. Following the tenets of
Solomon’s <em>Multispecies Urbanism</em> con­cept, the ‘Red List Wetland(s)’
pro­poses adding to, interacting with, and revitalising existing urban
green infrastructures through small inter­ventions by supporting plant,
animal and microbial species. Solomon’s anal­ysis of the Giardini soil
identifies drought, soil compaction and poor tree health. Adding two
ponds between the Dutch and Belgian pavilions and the Dutch and Italian
pavilions will positively impact these issues. Part community outreach,
part urban plan­ning, this project serves the Venice urban bioscape long
after this itera­tion of the Biennale departs.</p>

Red List Pond

<div class="work-content">
<p>A series of rhizotrons that incorpo­rate living soils and plants that
allow visitors to experience the rhizosphere – the rootzones of an urban
soil environment, specifically that of the Amsterdam regions Zui­doost
and Noord. A rhizotron is simul­taneously a laboratory, an
architec­tural expression and a technical tool used to observe the most
alive space of the soil below the soil’s surface – the rhizosphere.</p>

Rhizotrons

<div class="work-content">
<p>Under the guidance of Urbaniahoeve, the Community of Praxis of the
Amsterdam Zuidoost Food Forest samples and analyses the soils of the
55-hectare public food forest. This video documents the extensive soil
and chromatogram archive resulting from their first sampling phase of
the Amsterdam Zuidoost Food Forest soils. Soil chromatography is a
technically accessible and affordable soil analysis technique that
reveals soil-life interactions and relations in a visually compelling
manner.</p>

Soil - Life - Relations

<p>‘Space of Other’ is a performative space that spatializes the complex
concept and values of <em>The Multiplicity of Other</em>: other ways of life,
other ways of contextualizing information regarding space, other ways of
inhabiting and creating social relations within the context of the city.
<em>The Multiplicity of Other</em> explores the potential of a design language
that questions the patterns and models we have inherited; see, for
instance, the highly aesthetic ‘rational’ white space of the Dutch
Pavilion. Inside, visitors experience each other and themselves in
relation to this very specific spatial environment. They view different
works relating to the theme. The ‘Space of Other’ hosts talks and
performances that further explore potentialities of <em>The Multiplicity of
Other</em> in order to change the design paradigm.</p>

Space of Other Talk

<p>The(M)others is a radical canon proposed by Solomon and De Jong. It is a
list of about forty deceased women who have informed, influenced and
inspired both practices of <em>Multispecies Urbanism</em> and <em>The Multiplicity
of Other</em>. As a crowdsourced canon of exclusively women – many of whom
have Black, queer, Indigenous, activist and indirectly spatial
backgrounds – The(M)others challenges the very concept of canon as a
traditionally white male ‘best-of’ list. It is both a reference and a
starting point, as it is acknowledged that the very act of building a
canon from scratch is essentially exclusionary, and sparks curiosity
while necessarily inviting the viewer to add to it.</p>

The (M)others

<div class="work-content">
<p>The Green Triangle is a name that has been given to a public space
initiative by We are here Venice, which is located just outside the
Arsenale. The growing Green Triangle community of praxis led by So Young
Han uses Solomon’s Radical Observation methodology as a starting point.
Locals, who meet regularly, are re-appropriating the method to gather
knowledge about this under-appreciated green space in order to actively
engage with it. This results in new forms of the Radical Observation
methodology – unique to this group. Started in June 2020 (as part of the
Values for Survival Exploratorium), the Green Triangle is an ongoing and
post-Biennale intervention that aims to leave a legacy of public space
use, urban health, and community practice.</p>

The Green Triangle

<p>The Amsterdam Zuidoost Food Forest (also known as VBAZO) is a 55-hectare
ecological zone in the south-east of Amsterdam. Since 2018, more than 70
locals have become the VBAZO Community of Praxis, working in
collaboration with the municipality to transform the area. As a
Community of Praxis, they design and add food forest layers to the
already planted urban greens. They maintain contact and collaborate with
several municipal departments. This video describes the web of relations
necessary to replace Amsterdam’s standard green maintenance regime with
one supportive of the more-than-humans of the food forest. Photos of the
changing Amsterdam Zuidoost landscape and Solomon/Urbaniahoeve’s mature
food forest ecosystem provide a view into city as an ever-evolving urban
food forest.</p>
